Component Sourcing & BOM Procurement
Component sourcing starts with an unambiguous bill of materials. Exact manufacturer part numbers, approved alternatives and the required order quantity establish the purchasing scope.
Make the BOM purchasable
Include manufacturer, MPN, quantity per board, designators and population status. Package, tolerance, voltage rating and temperature grade can distinguish parts that appear similar in a short description. Keep distributor SKUs as useful references without substituting them for manufacturer identification.
Review availability and alternatives
Availability is time-sensitive and must be checked for the order. Ask about minimum order quantities, packaging increments, lifecycle status and source traceability. Treat a substitute as an engineering decision: document the difference, verify compatibility and obtain approval before procurement or assembly.
Agree the exception process
Set a purchasing owner for customer-controlled parts and a response path for shortages. Define excess ownership, unused-material disposition and requirements for certificates or traceability records where applicable. A BOM checker can find missing fields, but it cannot authenticate parts or confirm live inventory.
