China vs USA PCB Assembly: Compare the Full Scope

Compare specific supply routes

Country labels are too broad to establish a project’s quality, cost or lead time. Identify where boards are fabricated, parts are procured, assembly occurs and final testing is performed. A supplier may coordinate more than one location. Confirm the route in the quotation when project restrictions or customer requirements depend on it.

Build a landed-cost comparison

Align bare boards, materials, assembly, tooling, inspection and functional testing. Add freight, insurance where required, duties, taxes and other agreed import or delivery costs using current professional advice for the actual shipment. An ex-works price and a delivered price are not equivalent totals.

Include time and communication

Review component availability and manufacturing capacity for the actual order. Consider transit, time zones, engineering approval windows and the cost of shipping a reworked or replacement unit. A nearby supplier can still have long material lead times; an offshore supplier can only meet an expedited date when the entire route supports it.

Verify the requirements that matter

Specify product qualifications, customer sourcing restrictions, documentation, data handling and acceptance criteria before sharing controlled project information. Obtain evidence from the particular supplier and facility. Geography alone neither guarantees nor disproves process control or suitability.

Use a common decision sheet

Record total quoted scope, exclusions, material ownership, change-control process, first-article arrangements, test evidence and delivery basis side by side. Weight the factors according to the project rather than choosing only the lowest placement cost. Ask suppliers to resolve missing information before making the comparison final.
